Camp HOPE

Camp HOPE America  is the first evidence-based, out-of-school learning time program in the United States to focus on children and teens exposed to domestic violence. The mission of Camp HOPE America is to give youth a brighter future by creating pathways to hope and healing. At Camp HOPE America-Alabama we believe hope is, “believing in yourself, believing in others, and believing in your dreams.”

Camp HOPE America is composed of monthly activities and a week of camp. Participants should be prepared to participate in monthly activities to be eligible to attend the week of camp.

If you work with a child between the ages of 7 and 14 who has been impacted by family trauma (domestic violence, abuse, incarceration, etc.), contact Kelly Klehm for more information on making a referral. Please note that referrals must come from a school or community agency.

Referral Guidlines

  • Age 7-14

  • experience of family trauma: domestic violence, abuse, loss of a parent do to violence or incarceration, previous foster care system involvement

  • out of immediate crisis (abuser no longer in the home, family receiving support at school or through community agency)

  • be able to be safe in a group of peers (not physically aggressive)

Become a Hope Coach – For adults ages 22 and up: Attend trauma-informed training on Camp HOPE America, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and Hope Science; Participate in monthly Camp HOPE activities, typically on Saturdays; Be able to pass a background check.

Become a Summer Camp HOPE Counselor- For young adults ages 17-24.Counselors receive over 8 hours of training and participate in the week of summer camp. Hope Counselors work with a small group of participants leading the daily discussions, taking the group to camp activities, sleeping in the cabins with participants, and participating in nightly campfires songs and skits.
